How to Have a Staycation

The major health benefits of travel, including decreased stress, better health, and enhanced creativity, come from immersing yourself in a new place and culture - something that can’t be achieved at home. This is why we've come up with five ways you can bring travel into your home… only until we can show you new and exciting parts of Mexico.

1. Experience nature

We love experiencing things for the first time, and that includes taking in awe-inspiring landscapes. Being in nature increases happiness and it is still one activity we can enjoy while social distancing. It also teaches us the beauty of spending time alone! Apps like AllTrails can show you trails near you that you might not have explored before! Live in the city? Find a park near you or simply find time and an excuse to get outside.

2. Shake up a cocktail

Cancelled trip to Mexico? Why not make yourself a signature cocktail from this destination. We're sure you’ve tried tequila at least once in your life, but have you tried mezcal? Check with your local liquor store to see what they have and then look up a recipe online from your favorite Mexican destination, or one you have never been to before. We also just released the recipe for the official Gusto México margarita! Pro tip: Play music native from whichever country you’re “traveling to” to get yourself even more in the mood!

3. Cook a meal inspired from mile's away

Discovering other cultures through food is one of the greatest pleasures of travel. While fresh Baja fish tacos or coconut shrimp might not be on your radar anytime soon, La Bohemia in Todos Santos is giving salsa recipes and lessons live weekly on their Instagram stories. If you haven't tried their salsa verde yet, you're missing out! Head to their Instagram for more!

4. Learn a new language… or at least a few helpful phrases!

Have an hour to kill before you start making dinner for your family? Try wrapping your tongue around another language! Challenging our brains improves brain function, including better memory and mental flexibility and creativity. Online classes like Rosetta Stone and Babbel are perfect tools for you to use. If you don’t like the price point, DuoLingo is an amazing free app! Buena suerte!

5. DIY spa day anyone?

Lots of hotels and spas are sharing ways that you can create at-home spa experiences with simple items in your pantry - coffee grounds and olive oil is one of our favorite scrubs! You can also do an essential oil steam in the shower and rejuvenate yourself with fresh fruit or cucumber water afterwards. We also need mindfulness practice now more than ever, which is why we have started offering free yoga classes online. Head to our website to check it out!
